Sizing air conditioning is not a matter of picking a kilowatt figure off a chart. It is the room volume, the glazing and which way it faces, the insulation, how many people are in the space and when, the heat given off by equipment, and how often doors open. Get that wrong on the low side and the system runs continuously and never reaches setpoint; get it wrong on the high side and it short-cycles, dehumidifies badly and costs more than it needed to.
We survey free of charge across Welshpool, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Newtown and the surrounding mid-Wales and Shropshire area, and return a free written quotation the same or the following working day depending on the size of the job.

The cost of leaving it
Almost every system we are called to that 'never really worked' was decided before anyone measured anything. Someone picked a unit off a price list, someone else agreed a position because it was the easiest place to drill, and the building was never assessed at all.
Undersized systems run permanently at full output and still leave the room warm on the days you actually needed them. Oversized systems cycle on and off, leave the air clammy, wear their components out faster and cost more to buy. Badly sited outdoor units recirculate their own hot air, lose efficiency and land noise on the wrong window.
None of that can be fixed afterwards without ripping work out. It is decided at survey — which is exactly why the survey is free and why we would rather spend an hour in the building than quote from a floor plan.

Wall-mounted, cassette, ducted, multi-split or VRV/VRF chosen against the ceiling, structure and layout, with indoor positions marked up.
Refrigerant runs, condensate falls and outdoor unit locations planned for airflow, noise and access — before anyone drills anything.
Supply capacity, isolation, working at height and site access confirmed, with RAMS issued on request for inductions.

In detail
A specification is a series of trade-offs. Here is what sits behind each of them, so you can read a quote and understand what you are being offered.
Load comes from the fabric (glazing, orientation, insulation, roof), the occupancy (how many people, for how long) and the equipment (IT, kitchen, machinery, lighting). Each is counted rather than estimated as a lump.
The output is a capacity figure per space, which is what unit selection is then built on. Without it, everything downstream is a guess.
Wall-mounted units are quick, cost-effective and ideal for single rooms. Cassettes distribute air far more evenly across open-plan floors but need ceiling void depth and a condensate route. Ducted units hide everything except the grilles, which suits design-sensitive and listed interiors but is the most involved to install.
The building usually makes this decision. Void depth, structure, ceiling type and how the space is used matter more than preference.
One outdoor unit per indoor unit is simplest. Multi-splits serve several indoor units from one condenser and save external space, which often decides it on high-street and terraced properties. VRV/VRF serves many zones from modular plant, varies flow to demand and scales for future floors.
Line lengths and level differences affect performance on multi-splits and VRF, which is survey work — not something to resolve on installation day.
Condensers need free airflow, service access, a solid mounting and a position where noise does not land somewhere sensitive. Enclosed corners that recirculate hot air are the most common avoidable mistake we find.
Roof platforms, wall brackets and ground frames each carry their own access, weight and noise considerations, and are chosen at survey.
Refrigerant routes are planned to be as short, as direct and as concealed as the building allows. Condensate is best run on natural fall; lift pumps are used where the layout leaves no alternative, not as a default.
Deciding this at survey is why installations end up tidy. Deciding it on the day is why some do not.
Nearly everything we specify is a heat pump, delivering several units of heat per unit of electricity in reverse cycle. For buildings across mid-Wales and Shropshire with poor or expensive heating, that winter performance is often what justifies the project.
Inverter-driven plant, properly sized, uses noticeably less energy than oversized fixed-speed equipment — which is where good design pays for itself.
