An air conditioning installation is roughly three quarters preparation and one quarter fitting. The survey establishes how much heat has to be removed from each space and where the equipment can physically go. The design turns that into a specification: system type, unit sizes, pipe routes, condensate strategy, electrical supply and outdoor unit position. Only then does anyone pick up a drill.
On site the work covers core drilling or fabric penetrations, mounting indoor units and outdoor condensers, running insulated refrigerant pipework and condensate, electrical connection and controls, pressure testing, evacuating the circuit, charging refrigerant, commissioning and logging performance. Every one of those steps is where a cheap installation cuts corners, and every one of them shows up later as poor cooling, noise, water damage or an early compressor failure.

The cost of leaving it
Air conditioning is unusual in that a poor installation looks identical to a good one on the day it is finished. Both units switch on, both blow cold air, both get signed off. The difference only surfaces months later: the room that never quite gets cool on a hot afternoon, the condensate stain spreading across a ceiling tile, the outdoor unit that sounds like a wheelbarrow, the electricity bill that never dropped the way it was supposed to.
The usual root causes are dull and preventable. The system was never sized against a heat load, so it is undersized for the room. The circuit was not properly evacuated before charging, so moisture and air are in the refrigerant, degrading capacity and corroding the compressor from the inside. Pipework was run without adequate insulation, so it sweats. The condensate had no fall and no pump. The outdoor unit was tucked into a corner where it recirculates its own exhaust.
Putting those things right afterwards costs more than doing them correctly the first time, because the remedial work happens with finished decoration, occupied rooms and trading hours in the way.
It runs constantly, never reaches setpoint on hot days, and wears out early — and no amount of servicing fixes a sizing error.

In detail
Every installation makes the same set of decisions. Here is how we make them and why each one changes the result.
Single room, straightforward wall available, budget-led: a wall-mounted split. Several rooms and limited outdoor space: a multi-split from one condenser. Suspended ceiling and an open-plan floor: a four-way cassette for even distribution. Nothing may be visible: ducted, fed through grilles. A whole building with varying zone demand: VRV/VRF with modular outdoor plant.
The choice is driven by the fabric of the building and how the space is used, not by preference. We will tell you when the cheaper option is genuinely fine — and when it will disappoint you.
Refrigerant pipework is copper, brazed or flared to manufacturer specification, insulated along its whole length including behind trunking. Uninsulated or poorly insulated pipe sweats, wastes capacity and eventually drips onto whatever is beneath it. Line length and vertical separation between indoor and outdoor units matter: exceed the manufacturer's limits and capacity drops and oil return suffers.
Modern systems typically use R32 or R410A refrigerant. R32 has a substantially lower global warming potential and better efficiency, which is why most new equipment we install uses it. All refrigerant handling is F-Gas certified work and recorded.
Cooling produces water — a surprising amount of it. It has to go somewhere with a reliable fall to a drain, or be lifted by a condensate pump to somewhere it can. This is planned before the indoor unit position is fixed, because the alternative is a pump retro-fitted into a bad position or a drain that backs up in three summers' time.
The condenser needs clear airflow, service access, secure mounting on brackets or feet, and enough distance from windows and boundaries to keep noise reasonable. Enclosed corners and tight recesses cause recirculation of hot exhaust air, which cripples efficiency on exactly the days you need it most. On commercial buildings we also consider roof loading, access for future servicing and whether the position is defensible from a planning or neighbour perspective.
Most domestic and small commercial systems run from a dedicated single-phase circuit; larger plant may need three-phase. Controls range from a simple wall controller through to central controllers, timers, occupancy scheduling and app control. Getting scheduling right on a commercial system is one of the cheapest efficiency wins available — cooling an empty building overnight is pure waste.
Domestic installations are typically one or two days, single-phase, with priority on quiet operation, discreet pipe runs and a clean finish. Commercial installations add heat load from people and equipment, phasing around trading, RAMS and induction requirements, potential three-phase supplies, and refrigerant record keeping for the operator.
Domestic installations may currently qualify for 0% VAT, rising to 5% from April 2027 — ask us about eligibility when we quote.
Replacements are not automatically a like-for-like swap. Existing pipework can sometimes be reused if it is the right size, in good condition and compatible with the new refrigerant — and sometimes it absolutely cannot, in which case reusing it is a false economy that contaminates a new system. We check rather than assume, and tell you which it is.
Questions
Cost depends on system type, number of indoor units, pipe run length and access. A single-room split is at the lower end; multi-room, ducted and VRV/VRF systems scale from there. We give free fixed written quotations after a survey, usually the same day or the following day depending on the size of the job.
A single split system is typically a one-day job. Multi-room and commercial installations usually run one to three days — a recent two-unit office install was completed in two days. Larger phased projects are scheduled with you in advance.
Most domestic and commercial installations are permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and some flats have restrictions, and there are conditions around outdoor unit siting and noise. We will flag anything that looks like it needs checking with your local authority at survey stage.
Less than most people expect. Core drilling is brief and noisy, the rest is quiet. We use dust sheets, keep pipe runs planned rather than improvised, and clear down at the end of each day.

A properly installed and regularly serviced system gives many years of reliable service. Longevity is decided by two things: the quality of the installation and commissioning, and whether it is serviced. Neglected systems fail years before maintained ones.
