Single split or multi-split?

One room means a single split: one indoor unit, one outdoor unit, simplest and cheapest. Two or more rooms usually points to a multi-split, where one outdoor unit serves several indoor units — as in Lynda Dacruz's installation where a five-way system supplied four rooms.

Multi-splits are attractive when outdoor space or aesthetics are constrained, since you only site one condenser. The trade-off is that the units share plant, so it is worth thinking about which rooms are used at the same time.

Indoor unit styles

Wall-mounted units are the default: efficient, cost-effective and simple to service. Ceiling cassettes suit rooms with a suitable void and give more even air distribution. Ducted units hide everything except the grilles, which suits period properties and renovations where nothing should be visible. Floor-standing units work under windows where wall space is limited.

Where the outdoor unit goes

The condenser needs clear airflow, service access and a sensible distance from windows — yours and your neighbours'. Ground-mounted on feet is usually quietest because it avoids transmitting vibration into the wall; bracket mounting is used where ground space is not available. We will discuss noise honestly at survey, because it is the thing homeowners most often wish they had thought about.

Running costs and efficiency

Inverter systems modulate output rather than switching on and off, so once a room is at temperature the unit ticks over at low power. In cooling, running costs are modest for the comfort delivered. In heating, a heat pump typically produces several units of heat per unit of electricity, which is why the winter half of the year is often where the value is.

Efficiency depends on correct sizing, correct charge and clean filters. All three are within our control at installation and yours between services.

Noise levels

Modern indoor units are genuinely quiet at low fan speeds — usually quieter than a fridge. The mistake that creates noise complaints is undersizing, which forces the unit to run at high speed constantly. Outdoor noise is managed through unit selection, mounting method and siting away from bedroom windows and boundaries.

Planning, permissions and neighbours

Most domestic installations fall under permitted development, but there are conditions relating to the size and siting of the outdoor unit and noise at the boundary, and listed buildings, conservation areas and flats have additional restrictions. We flag anything worth checking with the local authority at survey stage rather than after installation.

Servicing your home system

An annual service keeps a domestic system efficient, quiet and within warranty: filters cleaned or replaced, indoor and outdoor coils cleaned, condensate drain cleared, charge and pressures checked, electrical connections inspected. Between visits, cleaning the filters yourself every few weeks in heavy use is the single most valuable thing you can do.

Domestic versus commercial installation

Domestic work prioritises quiet operation, discreet pipe routes, a clean finish and speed — most homes are done in a day or two. Commercial work adds heat load from people and equipment, phasing around trading hours, RAMS and F-Gas record keeping for the operator.
